What is the book Gray’s Anatomy?

Text Books

Think anatomy books and you’ll automatically think Gray’s Anatomy. The bible of medical students, physicians, and surgeons alike, it truly is the daddy of all anatomy books. First published in 1858, the 40th edition of Gray’s Anatomy was released in 2008 and enjoys continued success 153 years after it was written.

First published under the snappy title, Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, the book was eventually shortened to its now universally known Gray’s Anatomy, in homage to the author Henry Gray. Unfortunately Gray only lived up until the release of the second edition, as he contracted small-pox treating his nephew and died at the young age of 34. He was never to know what an impact his text book, the most famous anatomy book ever written, was to have on the world. If only he could have known that way into the twenty-first century, his scriptures would still be considered vital reading for medical students and professionals the world over. And that there are now numerous spin-off publications, products and even programmes; from Gray’s Anatomy for Students to Gray’s Atlas of Anatomy, Gray’s Anatomy flash cards and even the hugely successful U.S. medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, which plays on the title of his book.

Author Henry Gray, was born into a completely different medical world to the one we know today. Born during the Georgian era, in 1827, Gray became Lecturer on Anatomy at London’s St. George’s Hospital Medical School at the tender age of 26. In 1855 Gray approached his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter to produce an inexpensive and accessible anatomy book for students, and the two soon after began penning the text. Gray and Carter frequently dissected unclaimed bodies from workhouse and hospital mortuaries, to help explain and functions of the anatomy in their book. Considering what a concise and comprehensive tone Gray’s Anatomy is, it only took the pair 18 months to write.

So determined, was Gray, that this book was exactly what the medical world needed, he self-published both editions before his death in 1861. Since then another 38 editions have been published and millions upon millions of copies sold worldwide.

Gray’s Anatomy, however, is no easy read; the 38th edition consisted of 2,092 pages and it covers every aspect of human anatomy, from the skeleton, to the muscles to the circulation of the blood, to internal organs, the nervous system and the lymphatic system.

Since the original publication of Gray’s Anatomy, there have been major advances in anatomy; particularly in microscopic anatomy and the anatomy of the embryo, and subsequently the text has been edited, with sections added in. On the whole, however, the book remains a descriptive text of the human anatomy, used for the same audience for over 150 years. The fact that the text has only ever been updated, rather than completely rewritten in a different format, with a different title gives testament to the original’s comprehensiveness, which truly has stood the test of time.

Tips for last minute study

Studying tips

I might not be the top student in my class. But hey, I have done last minute study for several years now, and it worked! I never fail any of my papers. Well, I am just an average joe like you guys, I party a lot, I have a job, I spend most of my time with my friends and yes, girlfriends… you should imagine how much time that I have in a day… and how much time left for my study? NONE!

The first principle for effective last minute study is to leave everything behind and set your study as your only priority. You can leave your problems with your girl, family and even forget about you don’t even have a penny in your pocket. Bear in mind, all the time left until you sit for the exam is crucial, and you have to effectively use all the time left for your study. By the way, you have spent the whole year for other things, why don’t just sacrifice this little time for your future good? It won’t hurt.

Next principle is you have to gear yourself with essential tools, accessories, equipments or anything else that relevance for your study before you start. These may include a cup of dark coffee, a Mentos and even a tooth paste (this is a practice by a friend; she puts a little of it near to her eyes to stay focus). It depends on you. You should know what you need. As for me, I am fine with my iPod to start reading.

Besides that, you can also get a study buddy, and study together. Preferably someone from your class who sits the same exam paper as you do. Work together. Study together. It will save loads of time when you ask him if you find any problem in your study than just read it again and again.

Lastly, stay calm. Do not stress yourself to turn over to next page every 10 seconds in order to finish reading that whole 1000 pages book. You should understand what you are reading. It is ok for you to forget what you are reading in previous page while you are still reading, because you will eventually remember them during exam. Trust me.

Now, what are you waiting for? Start study, my friend! No more time to waste!

Study Abroad Advice And Tips

Studying tips

There are many individuals who have good education, top-notch degrees, but are still not able to find a job that matches up to their expectations or the level of education they have (seemingly) achieved. The reason is that they might be having the basic knowledge of a particular domain, but in order to get specialization in a field, studying abroad is sometimes the best bet. Following are some of the basic tips if you are looking to apply to foreign universities.

In order to select the college of your choice, the first step is to visit the websites of all the prospective colleges so as to get an idea about the programs being run. This will help students in the initial shortlisting. The next step would be to contact the administrative staff to get more details about the college, like the kind of placement record they have had over the past 5 years, what kind of facilities are provided, etc.
Colleges with faculty that has hands-on experience in the industry are any day a better choice than those that don’t, the reason being that professionals turned professors have a more practical outlook to bookish knowledge, besides a world of wisdom they have acquired during their years in the profession, which is a huge plus point. And contrary to popular belief, this is not true only in case of management studies, but every other field as well. Just think about it, what would be better, to learn the anomalies of carbon from a professor who has a fancy degree from a good university, or a scientist who has worked for years on the subject. Alternatively, students can also settle for colleges that have frequent guest lecturers, a common practice in management courses.
There are many colleges abroad that run exchange programs with affiliate universities in other countries. This provides a lot of diversity and exposure to students. For instance, someone living in India may go to London and visit Spain on an exchange program, resulting in a better understanding of multiple cultures and schools of thought, thereby helping in his/her evolution as a better professional.
Securing admission is not as complicated as it seems if one knows all the details. Almost all the reputed colleges around the world accept TOEFL/SAT/GMAT scores. This is a basic requirement for admission to any course. So, students must know which test they need to take and start preparing beforehand to land a good aggregate score.
In case hostel accommodation is not available, students must search for localities in the city that are good for students, and/or are relatively safer.

GED Study Tips: Notetaking

Studying tips

Many adults who begin studying for the GED had difficulty in high school and fell behind in learning skills. That means the GED seems harder than it needs to. The good news is that learning skills can be easy to improve.

One learning skill that can help you study so that you learn faster and better is taking notes. Taking notes can help you stay focused on what you’re studying, help you actively think about what you’re learning, and give you study materials to review later. Have you ever thought about how you take notes, though? What will help you learn and remember easiest? Here are some tips.

Make decisions! Note taking doesn’t mean writing down everything that’s said, or just writing down random things because you’re supposed to. The more decisions that you make about what’s really important and what you’ll need to know, the more you’re actively learning. Just making the decision that something’s important and writing it down helps you learn better and easier.

]]>

Use pictures! Words aren’t always the best way to make notes. Use arrows, boxes, pictures, or symbols to connect ideas, remember how things relate to each other, or picture what something is like. Remember the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”? It can be true in note taking. Pictures and diagrams can help you remember the information better and make more sense of it.

Use shortcuts! When you’re taking notes, you can use abbreviations or shorthand that make sense to you. You can use the same kinds of abbreviations that you might use when you’re texting, formal shorthand, or anything that makes sense to you. As long as you’re able to read it later, use any shortcut that you can to take notes faster.

Don’t let your notes go to waste! Going back over your notes later will help you remember what you’ve learned and teach your brain that this is information you’ll want to recall again and again. But just looking at your notes isn’t the best way. Reorganize your notes. Add to them. Write down questions. The more you update and change your notes, the more you’re interacting with them… and the more you’ll learn from them.

Study Tips For The Family Medicine Boards

Studying tips

Whether you are a practicing physician, or have a specialized interest in family medicine, taking the Family Medicine Boards helps you to brush up your basics and get updated with the latest developments in the field. The Family Medicine Certification Examination tests your knowledge and skill base in family medicine, while the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) uses the marks you score as a standard of qualification. In fact, if you are a practicing physician, your future hinges on the scores you get in your Family Medicine Boards. So, if you are studying for the Family Medicine Boards, you need to prepare in a systematic manner.

For starters, select a preparation course from a good Continuing Medical Education (CME) institute. These institutes offer all the information and knowledge that you would otherwise have to collate from different sources in one package. So, you do not need to hunt around for useful information.

Check if the institute is student-friendly. A good institute is in step with the times, and utilizes the power of the latest technologies with a single focus: helping students learn. Audio files, USB drives, and searchable pdfs are some of the tools that have made a student’s life easier today. Find out what digital tools your chosen institute is offering as study aids.

Your institute should be a complete package of everything you need to prepare for the Family Medicine Boards-seminars, lecture notes, slide shows and other audio-visual aids, and text books. Check for audio CDs with the book you buy. Most textbooks come with audio CDs and oral guides you can listen to on your way home from work, or at home.

An examination in a simulated environment is a good way to get prepared for the actual examination. A mock-test allows you to practice writing within the timelines. It also helps you to get an idea of the topics you need to revise more, and how you stand with regard to your examination preparations. Thus, after you have completed your preparations, it makes sense to opt for a mock-test in a good institute.

There are several institutes offering review courses for the Family Medicine Boards. Among these, the Ostler’s Institute in Indiana is reputed for its knowledgeable faculty and wide choice of courses to suit every need and budget. It also offers several comprehensive text books on Family Medicine. Besides courses for the written segment of the examination, it also offers MP3 audio recordings of lectures on the subject.

Your Study Tips For Preparing For Exams

Studying tips

“You have one hour to complete this test!” Does that statement cause you stress? It’s normal. You can let it get the better of you or you can cope. Your choice. Why do some students feel concern when faced with a timed test? Not prepared? Fear? Or just clock anxiety? You can learn to cope with test anxiety for school and for all the other test you will encounter in your life. Follow the seven suggestions shown below. (See, no stress. These are not mandatory. You won’t fail if you don’t follow them exactly. These are just some tips.)

First, make sure you prepare. Study should begin weeks before the exam, rather than the night before the exam. Next, set up a routine. Find a nice place to study. Make sure you follow a schedule. Select a start and stop time. Focus on the task. When time is up, you can stop.

Three – review the lessons and learning from you previous sessions. Do this every day. Go over your notes. (You DO take notes in class, don’t you?) Reviewing them reinforces learning and reduces stress and test anxiety. Four – anticipate what will be on the test. Listen to the teacher. Ask questions. Write down the answers. Find out what the teacher considers to be important. (Hint – stuff repeated from day to day will probably be on the test.)

Five – drill with practice questions and answers. Make lists or flash cards with questions and answers. Have someone ask you the questions and have them check your answers. Repetition is a key to learning. Six – study with other people. Learn what they know and help them learn what you know. Finally – relax when you take the test. Make sure you don’t engage in pre-test stress events. The day before the test, eat well and hydrate. Finally, get some sleep. Hey, it’s only a test.
